Portal in Wool - Limited Edition Collaboration
Client: Odabashian x Johanna Boccardo
Year: 2023
Location: Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico
CREATIVE DIRECTION
Portal in Wool translates Boccardo’s visual language of grids, retro-futurism, and spatial rhythm into textile form.
Developed on dotted graph paper as a set of analog 8-bit drawings, the composition captures the pulse of Miami’s ever-shifting color field and urban velocity.
“I took this from the creation train that I was already carrying,” says Boccardo. “What I did was translate it into what Odabashian does. This piece reflects a lot of what I am currently working on in my studio.”
The rug functions as a portal object—a tactile expression of architectural imagination and digital nostalgia.
MATERIALITY & TECHNIQUE
- Fiber: Semi-worsted, double-washed New Zealand wool
- Weaving: Classic Moroccan knot, hand-crafted by Odabashian artisans
The dense knotting and soft sheen reveal the piece’s sculptural depth while maintaining a precision that mirrors its original grid-based drawing.
IMPACT
This collaboration stands as the artist’s most personal and liberated work within the Odabashian partnership—an unhindered translation of her internal architecture into woven matter.
Exhibited at MDF Mexico Design Fair 2023 in Puerto Escondido, Portal in Wool bridged craft and concept, situating Boccardo’s studio practice within the broader conversation of design as living signal.
